Our History

Immanuel United Church of Christ continues to grow in faith, in fellowship, and in service to the world in Christ’s name.

For more than 150 years, people have gathered with the purpose of being a faithful presence in Shillington.

For more than 150 years, they have prayed, supported, learned, worshiped, served, sung, and grown together under the guidance of the Spirit.
We give thanks for the generations who dreamed, served, and testified to the power of Immanuel – “God with Us” – laying the foundation for us to continue living out the call to Love God & Love Neighbor in the present and into the future.

The Future

Milestones

  • 1874

    Nineteen people met in a former school house, then built and dedicated a church.

  • 1880

    Sunday School served as an important source for community activities.

  • 1958

    Cornerstone laid for the current church building at 99 S. Waverly Street

  • 1985

    Immanuel Preschool of Shillington began its ministry, serving children (ages 2-5) and their families

  • 2002

    Church campus was expanded to add classrooms and multi-purpose rooms for service, education, and community gatherings

  • 2015

    Immanuel was designated an Open & Affirming Congregation of the UCC, committed to inclusivity, welcoming and respectful of the dignity of every person

  • 2017

    Worship sanctuary space remodeled to enhance accessibility for all

  • 2020

    In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Immanuel temporarily transitioned from in-person to online worship. Technology was installed to facilitate live-streaming and recording of worship services, musical offerings, baptisms, and other events.

  • 2024

    Celebration of 150 years of ministry

Fairview Cemetery

Founded in 1876, Fairview Cemetery is owned by Immanuel United Church of Christ of Shillington. It is an all inclusive, non-profit cemetery offering burial lots and burial services. On a day to day basis, the cemetery is managed by the Superintendent, who is solely responsible to the elected board of Directors. All lot purchases, burial arrangements or other services are handled by the Superintendent.
