Frequently Answered Questions

What does Immanuel mean when it says it is a church that is “Open and Affirming”?

Open and Affirming (ONA) is the United Church of Christ’s (UCC) designation for congregations, campus ministries, and other bodies in the UCC which make a public covenant of welcome into their full life and ministry to persons of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions. The “full life and ministry” includes the sacraments (i.e. baptism, communion), marriage and leadership roles. The concept of Open and Affirming is extended by Immanuel to include people of all differences including ethnic, racial, economic, etc.

How can I find out more about the United Church of Christ faith?

Please visit our United Church of Christ beliefs page as well as the United Church of Christ webpage for more information.

Within the UCC, we believe God is Still Speaking in our everyday life. Our faith is 2,000 years old. Our thinking is not. We believe in God’s continuing testament. This is why we are committed to hearing God’s ancient story anew and afresh in our lives and in the world today. No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here. We believe in extravagant welcome. This is why we insist that God’s communion table is open, not closed, and God’s gift and claim in baptism are irrevocable. We advocate justice for all. Never place a period where God has placed a comma.
We believe the church’s mission is to change lives – individually, systemically and globally. We work to make transformation possible, but trust in God’s grace.
